Abstract;Psychiatric problems that surface in childhood and adolescence have attracted much public attention. To deal with these problems, the Japanese government provides various facilities; including child guidance centers in the welfare area and educational guidance centers. The role of psychiatric health welfare centers is one of the most important parts of these community systems. We investigated the operating conditions of 14 psychiatric health welfare centers in Japan over 3 years. We found (1) There is a pressing need for such centers, (2) Two types of consultations are used; direct personal ones and telephone consultations, (3) Patient age generally ranges from 12 to 19 years old, (4) Only a very few specialists in these centers deal with the mental health of children. These findings clarify the current role of psychiatric health welfare centers. (author abst.)
