| Abstract; The infant-caregiver relationship is the major target of most interventions taken for the safety of infant mental health. The assessment of that relationship is the focus of evaluations of infants and their families in a clinical setting. We introduce the formal approach of Zeanah et al. for assessing the infant-caregiver relationship and discuss its application to assessments in Japan based on our experiences, that we use the formal assessment of the relationship. A model for assessing the infant-caregiver relationship assessment is proposed. The important relationship domains to be measured, as well as the method of assessment and how to use it, a clinical problem-solving procedure, face-to-face interaction, and the working model of the child interview, are described. A means of conceptualizing the general level of relationship adaptation as assessed by the Parent - Infant Relationship Global Assessment Scale also is proposed. Lastly, we discuss Japanese applications of this formal assessment. (author abst.) |
