| Abstract;Snoring is usually measured at the neck. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between snoring measured at this site and ambient noise. The subjects were 103 patients with possible sleep apnea who underwent diagnostic polysomnography. Snoring was recorded using an air-coupled microphone at the neck over the trachea. The sound was digitized to calculate the power spectra using a fast Fourier transform. Ambient noise was measured by a sound-level meter with A-weighted modification at a distance of 1m over the patient. The upper 5 percentile sound pressure level (L5) of ambient noise was significantly correlated with the three variables from the tracheal sound: mean sound pressure of snoring sound, equivalent continuous sound pressure level, and L5. We conclude that tracheal sound analysis is useful for the quantification of the ambient noise due to snoring. (author abst.) |
