Abstract; This paper explains the following items on the titled selectivity: 1) Objectives; to clarify the effects of substitution groups, 2) test samples used; mono- and di-chlorinated isomers of chlorobisphenyl and chlorotoluene, 3) dechlorination test conditions; in 2-propanol dissolved with sodium hydroxide at 40 .DEG.C. under the presence of supported paradium catalyst (Pd/C), 4) results on chlorobisphenyls; reactivity of a chlorine atom at 2-position (o) was significantly lower than in 3-(m) and 4-(p) positions, 5) results on chlorotoluenes; no such significant difference was observed as in chlorobisphenyls and 6) the above difference is induced by steric effect of substitution group (phenyl and methyl groups).
