Abstract;A newly developed simple and practical system enables a family member to remotely monitor an elderly person's movements at home displayed on the screen of a cellular phone by means of an infrared sensor and the Internet. The detection and communication unit consist of a low power-consumption type infrared human body sensor,"NaPiOn", and a wireless module with its power consumption minimized by optimizing the data communication protocol. This compact wireless sensor unit is easy to install, use and maintain. In addition, the signal from each sensor is converted to a character string for simple and high-speed monitoring communication. Signal transmission via E-mail can be received by practically any type of cellular phone without relying on a fixed telephone line. (author abst.)
