| Abstract;Without going through the complex process of reading a sleep polysomnogram including EEG, EMG and EOG, a relatively easy-to-measure criterion for sleep state and sleep latency has been developed using heart rate variability. The software determines one of the four sleep state of WAKE, REM, non-REM or SWS every minute by using heart rate index extracted from heart rate variability and appearance probability of each sleep state from the time of laying down on the bed. The experiment results show the evaluation accuracy to be 67 % (N = 87) and sleep latency determination to be 2.8 minutes (N = 57) or smaller after improving the algorithm. Having a good night's sleep is essential for a person's healthy daily life in today's information intensive society. The developed method, which does not require special equipment or skills for reading a sleep polysomnogram, would become an effective means of assessing sleep states or health condition at home.
