Abstract; With the intention of providing the bather with comfort and relaxation, a sofa-type bathtub has been developed with a smoothly curved "high-back" back support and a curved flange to support the neck area. The developed style, however, lacked physical data to prove the expected effects such as comfort and relaxation, thus was weak in appealing to potential users. In order to quantify the level of comfort and relaxation during bathing, brain wave measurements were used for evaluating the comfort level and an electrocardiogram was used for assessing the state of the autonomous nervous system. This report describes the superiority of the "sofa-type bathtub" to previous company products based on these evaluations along with the knowledge on the bathtub shapes with high level of comfort and relaxation obtained from subjective assessment results.
