| Abstract; The hypertension treatment was outlined from the side of medical economy. Composite proportion and year transition of the health expenditure were illustrated, and it was shown that health expenditures for cancer, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, heart failure and the like kept increasing since 1977. It was exemplified that the cost-effectiveness was high, especially for the treatment of elderly hypertensive patients on the cost-benefit analysis. The cost for drugs was explained, and the trial made by Saruta which compared the health expenditure by Ca antagonist and ACE inhibitor was introduced. An example which estimated that Ca antagonist was cheaper by 1,263 million yen than ACE inhibitor, when 100,000 persons were treated for 3 years, was introduced. Finally, the selection of the appropriate hypotensive drug was described, and it was indicated that the treatment strategy considering not only effectiveness and safety of hypotensive drugs but also the economical side was important. |
