| Abstract; In order to know the actual status concerning dysphagia in the elderly, we investigated forms of meals, analyzed the results of a questionnaire based on Fujishima's form and evaluated the status of dysphagia by Saito's "clinical classification of dysphagia severity." The objects of this study were 46 elderly people in a ward for long-term care, 64 elderly people in an institution for the elderly and 36 general elderly people and 29 young and middle-aged people in an outpatient clinic. As a result, three groups among the elderly had significantly severe dysphagia compared to the group of the young and middle-aged. Furthermore, we analyzed the factors associated with severe dysphagia in the group undergoing long-term care. Factors such as age, sex, dementia and aphasia, are not associated with severe dysphagia, however there was a significant difference based on past history of cerebrovascular disorder or dysarthria. Next, a modified water-swallowing test and food test in the group with long-term care were examined. The results of these screening tests correlated with the classification of dysphagia severity. These screening tests of swallowing were bound to be useful for the diagnosis of swallowing disorders in the elderly. (author abst.) |
