| Abstract; The shape of tracheal cannulas is very important during long-term use by tracheostomized patients. After tracheoesophageal diversion, a properly shaped intratracheal cannula should be used to prevent complications such as a innominate artery rupture. A comparative study of tracheal shapes used by 33 tracheoesophageal diversion patients and 7 laryngectomy patients was conducted from 1996 to 2002 using sagittal CT scans. The tracheal shapes were estimated by the tracheal curvature. The average angle of the tracheal curvature after tracheoesophageal diversion was 47.4.DEG., and the average angle of the tracheal curvature after laryngectomy was 34.7.DEG.. Generally, ready-made tracheal cannulas with a large curvature (60.DEG. and 90.DEG. etc.) are used post-operatively. In this study, it was found that the trachea after tracheoesophageal diversion or laryngectomy had a smaller curvature than that of ready-made tracheal cannulas. (author abst.) |
