Abstract;Zeolites, especially Na-Z-M10 (mordenite type), effectively catalyzed the Cannizzaro reaction by refluxing in DMF solvent where p-nitrobenzaldehyde was converted to p-nitrobenzyl alcohol and p-nitrobenzoic acid by self-oxidation- and-reduction. Activities of catalysts for the reaction have been evaluated by the reaction rate. The higher activity was observed with increase in Na content of the zeolite. Other aromatic aldehydes, o- and m-nitrobenzaldehyde, m- and p-chlorobenzaldehyde, and benzaldehyde, were also converted by this reaction system to their respective products. (author abst.)
