Abstract;During the 16 years between 1987 and 2002, 33 isolates of the bovine viral-diarrhea virus (BVDV) were recovered from 33 head of cattle with either mucosal disease or persistent infection. The animals had been kept on 21 farms in Iwate Prefecture in the northeastern district of Japan. The 5' untranslated regions (UTR) of the isolates were phylogenetically analyzed. On the basis of the 5' UTR sequences, 29 of the 33 isolates were classifield as genotype 1 and comprised subtype 1a (17 isolates), subgroup 1a' (3 isolates), and subtype 1b (9 isolates). The remaining 4 isolates were classified as genotype 2. The sequences of genotype 2 BVDVs were identical to each other, but their nucleotide sequences at positions 219 and 278-known as genotype-2 virulence markers-were not identical to those of high-virulence strains. Necropsy revealed no extensive internal hemorrhagic lesions in the cattle from which genotype-2 isolates were recovered. The genotype-2-specific antibody was detected in none of 725 samples of bovine sera from 145 farms in the same prefecture in 2001. These results suggest that various BVDV-strain genotypes including genotype 2 are present in Iwate Prefecture and that the permeation limits of genotype 2 are localized. (author abst.)
