| Abstract; We investigated the optimum number of times a dog should be bathed from the viewpoint of the comfort of owner and animal sharing the same living space. We determined the composition and amounts of lipids in the canine coat and observed changes in these parameters over time. We discovered that lipids in the canine coat consist of free fatty acids, cholesterol, sterol esters, wax esters, and glycerol esters. Esters account for 80% or more of the lipids present in the coat. Immediately after bathing, amounts of lipids in the coat dropped to approximately 60% but recovered initial levels 72 hours later. An animal smell was perceptible on dogs 72 or more hours after a bath. On the basis of this study, we concluded that from the sanitary viewpoint, a dog should be bathed once every 3 to 4 days.
