Abstract; As awareness of environmental issues has intensified over the years, "dry cutting" which does not require the use of cutting fluid, has been attracting attention as it greatly reduces both energy requirements and toxic substance levels. Dry cutting is difficult with standard coatings when milling aluminum, because the material being milled tends to weld to the cutting edges. This paper studies diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings, whose low friction coefficient has caused them to gain much attention as a countermeasure to the situation described above, and the outstanding performance of the Me-DLC coating, which we developed as a coating for dry milling of aluminum alloys.
