| Abstract; We report a case of pellucid marginal corneal degeneration with acute hydrops and spontaneous corneal perforation. A 44-year-old male consulted us for eye pain, injection and decreased visual acuity in the left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed marked stromal edema resulting from rupture of Descemet's membrane in the inferior cornea and pinhole corneal perforation at the top of the corneal edema in the left eye. The acute hydrops and corneal perforation were resolved with medical treatments ; 4 months later the patient could wear contact lens, with best-corrected visual acuity 1.2 in the left eye. Since the patient had atopic dermatitis and allergic conjunctivitis, he rubbed his eyes violently. Allergy and eye-rubbing appear to be important risk factors in the development of acute hydrops and corneal perforation. (author abst.) |
