| Abstract; The color of the skin is known to reflect the blood flow within. Because the melanin is few in the lip and the horny layer is thin, the dullness of lip was presumed to be influenced easily by the color of blood. We studied the physiological differences between colorful and dull-colored lips by measuring blood flow and oxygen saturation of hemoglobin. We found that dull-colored lips and the corner of lips (generally dull-colored compared to the center of lips) show relatively poor blood flow and lower oxygenated hemoglobin. By the way, Vitamin P is known to enhance blood circulation. However it is hardly soluble in water and oil, and the usage has been limited extremely. Then .ALPHA.-glucosyl hesperidin made by glucosylating hesperidin, a kind of Vitamin P, was recently developed. .ALPHA.-Glucosyl hesperidin is easily dissolved to water. We incorporated .ALPHA.-glucosyl hesperidin into a lipstick for trial. It was found that blood flow was increased 30 minutes after application, and after two weeks of daily application the lips became noticeably less dull. These findings provide evidence that the decrease of blood flow has close relation to the dullness of lips. (author abst.) |
