Abstract; An oxidizing intermediate generated from a salen iron complex are investigated as a model of mononuclear nonheme iron enzymes. Addition of mCPBA to the salen iron complex having bulky mesityl substituents in CH2Cl2 at -80.DEG.C. generates the blue-green intermediate. UV-Vis spectra suggest the generation of the transient intermediate having a distinct electronic structure from the starting salen iron complex. The detailed structure is further investigated by means of Moessbauer, EPR, NMR and resonance Raman spectroscopy. (author abst.)
