Abstract;A new prefiltering scheme targeted at low bitrate video coding such as MPEG-4 is proposed in this paper. Our smoothing scheme is based on anisotropic diffusion and achieved by extending spatial Perona-Malik diffusion to saptio-temporal. It is verified, through various computer simulations, that our prefilter improves subjective quality of filtered images by preserving important edge information well, and that it also reduces bit count of the compressed images considerably.
