Abstract; We separated patients with atopic dermatitis into those with and those without cataract, and compared the corneal endothelium of both groups to normal controls in terms of endothelial cell density, coefficient of variation and frequency of hexagonal cells. Next, we compared corneal endothelium changes at one year after cataract surgery between patients with atopic cataract and those with age-related cataract. Endothelial cell density in those with atopic dermatitis and those with atopic cataract was significantly decreased compared to normal controls. After cataract surgery, corneal endothelium changes in atopic cataract were similar to those in age-related cataract. At one year after cataract surgery in atopic cataract, damage to corneal endothelium was not progressive. (author abst.)
