Abstract; The purpose of this study was to explore whether acupuncture is therapeutically applicable to ocular disease. To 19 volunteers (38 eyes) comprising 14 males and 5 females we administered acupuncture at 10 needle points: IR3 (RL), SP6 (RL), GB20 (RL), GV20, EX-HN2 and BL2 (RL), for 15 miniutes. Before and after stimulation via acupuncture we assessed visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP) with Goldmann applanation tonometer, Schirmer test, blood flow of the orbita and visual evoked potential (VEP). Results showed visual acuity improvement in 26 eyes. The Schirmer test showed increased lacrimation in 18 eyes. IOP was reduced significantly, from 14.3 .+-.3.78 mmHg (mean .+-.SD) to 12.6.+-.2.43 mmHg (mean.+-.SD) (p=0.002, t-test). Blood flow of the orbita increased in 10 eyes. The VEP P100 value was reduced in 8 eyes. Stimulation via acupuncture does not negatively influence ophthalmological findings, which suggest that acupuncture is of value in treating glaucoma, dry eye and ischemic eye diseases. (author abst.)
