Abstract; We evaluate the influence of macular disease on variable corneal compensator operation in scanning laser polarimetry. Birefringence in the macular area was measured in eyes with normal retina, central serous chorioretinopathy or macular chorioretinal atrophy. Non-uniform birefringence was seen corresponding to the area of chorioretinal atrophy. Use of the variable corneal compensator neutralize corneal birefringence might fail in eyes with macular disease. (author abst.)
