Abstract; It is well known that ultraviolet (UV) radiation suppresses immune function and was considered as a major cause of a certain type of skin cancers. In this study, we investigated the effects of UV and oxidative stress on immune function using several in vitro cell culture models. As a result, it is demonstrated that UV damaged the immune function via an oxidative pathway, and the immune suppression was mitigated by anti-oxidative treatment. These results support the hypothesis that UV-induced immune suppression is at least partially mediated by reactive oxygen species. (author abst.)
