Abstract;A High-functioning autistic individuals with well-developed verbal ability have pragmatic impairments irrespective of their high VIQs on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale. To clarify the similarities and differences of their Wechsler profiles as compared with the typical Wechsler profile of autism, we analyzed the Wechsler IQ profiles of three autistic subgroups; a high VIQ group, a borderline VIQ group, and a mild MR group, which all were distinguished by their VIQs and FSIQs. The borderline VIQ (70.LEQ.VIQ<85) and mild MR groups shared a VIQ<PIQ discrepancy pattern and a Wechsler verbal profile characterized by a peak on Digit Span and a trough on Comprehension. The high VIQ group had a VIQ>PIQ discrepancy pattern but not the typical verbal profile. The Wechsler performance profiles of the three groups, however, were similar, except for a difference in the level of functioning. The highest-functioning autism subgroup therefore may develop qualitatively different language from other subgroups and normally developing individuals. These findings are discussed in terms of how high-functioning autistic individuals with high VIQs acquire language and what the Wechsler Scale can evaluate about language.
