Abstract; The author proposes 'medical PTSD' as a concept that explains the type of PTSD induced by such traumatic experiences as the sudden diagnosis of illness, painful symptoms, severe treatment, or hospitalization. The process of recovery from medical PTSD and the probabilities for its prevention are discussed. In the two cases reviewed, the pre-adolescent patients recounted dreadful or painful experiences, a sense of helplessness or of isolation in nightmares or play. High sensitivity to their sufferings by health professionals is considered to have prevented medical PTSD. Recovery was assumed to be possible because the patients could express anger and expose their traumatic experiences in a safe environment. It is suggested that parents who have witnessed their children suffering under traumatic conditions also be treated to avoid medical PTSD. In particular, preventive intervention and psychotherapeutic care for medical PTSD should be included as a standard therapy for childhood cancers. (author abst.)
