| Abstract;Propofol given at small dose possesses the direct antiemetic properties. We therefore evaluated the efficacy of small dose of propofol for preventing emetic episodes in women scheduled for mastectomy. In a randomized, double-blind manner, 40 female patients, ASA physical status I-II, aged 43-65 years, received intravenously either propofol 0.5 mg/kg or placebo (Intralipid) at the completion of surgical procedure. A standard general anesthetic technique, including sevoflurane and nitrous oxide in oxygen, was used. The incidence of emetic symptoms (nausea, retching, and vomiting) during 0-24 hr after anesthesia was less in patients who had received propofol than in those who had received placebo (20% versus 50%, P<0.05). No clinically serious adverse events were observed in either group. In conclusion, small dose (0.5 mg/kg) of propofol administered intravenously at the end of surgery is effective for the prevention of emetic episodes in women undergoing mastectomy. (author abst.) |
