Abstract;Ultraprecision CNC machine tools are considered to be indispensable as an industrial equipment for manufacturing aspheric lenses used in digital cameras and DVDs, and light guide plates used in liquid crystal displays. Several innovative technologies are employed in the ultraprecision machine tools; especially fundamental and important technology is ultraprecision positioning. In the present paper, the ultraprecision positioning technologies for the linear motion of ultraprecision machine tool tables are discussed from the viewpoint of friction and motion-reduction in the feed drive mechanism. It is concluded that the following two positioning technologies will support the development of the ultraprecision machine tools: the hydrostatic lead screw that is versatile and advantageous for high-positioning accuracy, and the linear motor that is advantageous for high feed rate.
