Abstract; This paper reviews the definition, fundamental concept, history of methodology development and recent researches on the sediment budget approach-to locate sediment production and storage sites, to identify transport processes and linkages amongst them, to estimate storage volumes and transport rate. Although most budget studies have been carried out to estimate and evaluate anthropogenic effects on sediment delivery, other studies focus on typical landform systems, or on dynamic or transient landscape systems. The major challenge is to estimate sediment storage volumes and residence times. Despite of such many difficulties, it is a flexible concept to describe complex systems in a simple schema. Especially, human impact and sediment disasters have been evaluated using the sediment budget approach.
