Abstract; The dynamics of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in a steep channel (Tanasawa creek) of a mountainous catchment (4.07km2) in Nagano Prefecture was investigated. Understanding the time lag of sediment discharge against water discharge as hysteresis effects is the key issue for estimating suspended sediment yield. To evaluate the hysteresis effects, water discharge and SSC have been measured for 2 years. From the data obtained with automatic samplers during summer flood events, the relation between SSC and water discharge peaks, and the hysteresis characteristics were examined, and four hysteresis patterns were classified.
