Abstract; As a first step for solution of the sediment discharge problem in Okinawa, the authors carried out field observations of red sediment generation in different stages of cultivation on pineapple fields to develop methods of prediction and prevention of red sediment discharge. At four test fields in the Furushima river catchment in eastern Okinawa they measured amount of rainfall, amount of surface runoff from the fields, turbidity of the runoffs, aggraded sediment volume and particle size distribution of sediment in sand traps. Using these results they examined the red sediment discharge characteristics such as relationship among erosion of the field, amount of sediment discharge and stages of pineapple cultivation, and threshold strength of rainfall causing erosion.
