Abstract; The fore-dunes (artificial sand dunes) have a significant role in coastal afforestation. Recently however, in some areas, blown sand is moving further inland from the fore-dunes degrading the function of fore-dunes to control wind-blown sand. This paper discusses the changes in sand level in the fore-dune area of Shonai coastal sand dunes. Measurements of vertical and horizontal surface shapes of the fore-dunes and the shoreline were conducted over a period of two years. The relationship among the results of measurements, the distance from a river mouth, vegetation and parking areas created near the shoreline was examined. The results indicates that the "two-hump camel"-shaped depression in the Shonai sand dune, consisting of the fore-dune and the groins on the shoreline side, has an important function to store blown sand.
