Abstract; The Ishikarigawa River is a class A river flowing through the central part of Hokkaido. The length of the river is 268 km with its watershed area of 14,300 km.2, which occupies 17% of whole Hokkaido.64% of the watershed is occupied by the forest. The annual precipitation is 1,300 mm, and the human population in the watershed is about 3 million. In the watershed which had been a residential area of the Ainu before 1868, the migration of people from Honshu was undertaken as the policy thereafter, resulting in the population increase.Improvement of the Ishikarigawa River was started in 1910.At its beginning, the open cut was a main work, and the linearization of the meander interval was done here and there.Although the present Ishikarigawa River is not always prudential for the floods, the following are kept in view and aimed at: The river development emphasizing the multinatural river and environment; the river management of the direction toward completing the countermeasure that emphasizes the soft side against the disasters.
