Ishikaridake(its elevation: 1,962 m) of the Taisetsu mountains, and it flows down to the Kamikawa Basin through Sounkyo Gorge; in Asahikawa City this river meets tributaries of the Ushubetsu, Chubetsu, and Biei, and flows down to Kamuikotan to enter the Ishikari Plain. In addition, after being joined with the Uryu, Sorachi, Ikushunbetsu, Yubari, Chitose, Toyohira, and other rivers, the Ishikarigawa River runs through Sapporo City before flowing into the Sea of Japan. This is a class A river with a length of 268 km. There are 48 municipalities including Sapporo City in the watershed, where 3 million people, about a half of the Hokkaido population, are living. In the upper watershed, it is a river with abundant natural environments such as Mt. Taisetsu National Park and Shikotsu-Touya National Park.
