Abstract;c-BN is a substance of high hardness and high thermal conductivity next to diamond. As it has lesser reaction to the ferrous metals than diamond, it is mainly used for the tools to machine ferrous metals that are very difficult to machine. In the past, the hardened steel with hardness of 55HRC or above can only be ground. However, the turning of such steel became possible for the first time with sintered c-BN inserts, SUMIBORON developed by Sumitomo Electric in 1977. Recently, high speed, high efficiency and high precision have been expected in the turning of hardened steel. As a result, various materials for cutting tools have been developed in response to the market demand. In addition, the use of sintered c-BN tools for the machining of cast iron and sintered alloy has been increasing because of the highly efficient machining capability although they were machined with carbide, cermet or ceramic tools in the past.
