Abstract;Low-carbon resulfurized free-machining steels, which are mainly used for small components such as hydraulic use, are generally machined under built-up edge (BUE) formation conditions with the most important criterion being surface finish. It is important to clarify the effect of BUE on surface finish and the effect of metallurgical factors on BUE formation, in order to develop free-machining steels that do not require the addition of lead. This article summarizes recent investigations related to the above point of view. (author abst.)
