Abstract;Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) is administrated to the patients with various types of liver diseases for its hepatoprotective effects. The aim of this study is whether PGE1 ameliorates hyperbilirubinemia with liver failure. Alprostadil was administrated to 4 patients intravenously at a dose from 500 .MU.g/day to 80 .MU.g/day and misoprostol to 4 patients per os at a dose from 1200 .MU.g/day to 400 .MU.g/day with hyperbilirubinemia caused from liver failure. In seven of 8 patients total bilirubin decreased from 24.2 mg/dL to 3.9 mg/dL, from 19.8 mg/dL to 2.6 mg/dL, from 33.1 mg/dL to 22.8 mg/dL, from 24.6 mg/dL to 3.5 mg/dL, from 14.7 mg/dL to 4.8 mg/dL, from 27.1 mg/dL to 23.9 mg/dL, from 15.0 mg/dL to 6.0 mg/dL respectively and in 1 patient increased from 16.2 mg/dL to 35.5 mg/dL. Five of 8 patients generally improved and 3 patients died, of liver failure, sepsis and rupture of esophageal varises respectively. Finally of the 5 patients discharged 3 died of rupture of esophageal varices, rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma and liver failure. One patient is alive and the other one is not followed. There was no relation between the total dose of PGE1 and their prognoses. We conclude that PGE1 ameliorates hyperbilirubinemia with liver failure. (author abst.)
