| Abstract;Genital herpes (GH) is one of the sexually transmitted diseases (STD) that is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2), and is usually classified into "Primary infection" and "Recurrent". As for the treatment of GH in Japan, some anti-HSV drugs are used mainly for the primary infection and recurrence, and have been proved to shorten the period of the clinical signs and symptoms of GH. It is also well known that the effectiveness would be enhanced by starting the treatment at an early stage. Previously, Sugase et al. reported the clinical efficacy of valaciclovir (VACV) 500mg taken twice daily in the episodic treatment of recurrent genital herpes (RGH). For the purpose of evaluating the efficacy of early treatment of RGH, we re-analyzed the clinical trial data retrospectively. Our results are as follows; 1) The duration of lesion healing, loss of pain/discomfort and disappearance of all signs and symptoms were 5.2 days, 3.2 days and 5.2 days respectively among the patients who initiated the treatment within 6 hours of the first signs or symptoms. On the other hand, 6.1 days, 5.9 days and 6.9 days were required respectively among the patients who initiated the treatment within 12-24 hours. 2) The patients were supplied with VACV and instructed to self-initiate the treatment within 24 hours of the first signs or symptoms of RGH, and some patients maneged to abort episodes. Vesicular lesions were aborted in approximately 20 % of the patients who initiated the treatment within 6 hours of the first signs or symptoms. It can be suggested that early treatment of RGH accelerate relief of the symptoms from this analysis. (author abst.) |
