Abstract; In this work, hierarchical deinterlacer banks are proposed as a new tool for spatio-temporal scalable coding. Deinterlacer banks are novel filter banks in the sense that a progressive video sequence is separated into two progressive video sequences of a half rate and interlaced sequences are producted as intermediate data. Unlike the conventional filter banks, the technique is constructed in a way unique to multi-dimensional systems by using invertible deinterlacers which we have proposed before. In this report, we further investigate spatio-temporal multi-resolution analysis through the deinterlacer banks. We propose hierarchical deinterlacer banks accompanied by the discrete wavelet transform as a spatial transform. The proposed technique provides an interlaced sequence as intermediate data, a half-rate progressive sequence, and a quarter spatial resolution sequence, as well as the original full-resolution full-rate video sequence. It is verified that fine spatio-temporal multi-resolution analysis involved with various formats is given through the multistage process of our proposed deinterlacer banks. Some experimental results show the potential of the proposed filter banks to practical scalable video compression. (author abst.)
