Abstract; With cephalocaudal and transverse folding of the embryo, a body cavity, bordered by somatic mesoderm and a splanchnic mesoderm, is formed by the end of the fourth week of gestation. Somatic mesoderm and splanchnic mesoderm form the parietal layer of the peritoneum and the visceral layer of the serous membranes covering the abdominal organs, respectively. The epidermis of the body wall develops from surface ectoderm, and the dermis and muscles of the body wall develop from somites derived from the paraxial mesoderm. The patterning of the abdominal wall muscles is determined by the connective tissue derived from the somatic mesoderm layer. The causes of ventral body wall defects are a failure of body folding and incomplete development of body wall structures including muscle, bone, and skin. (author abst.)
