Abstract;Umbilical colic, common in children aged from 5 to 12 years, is a kind of functional abdominal pain. In these patients, autonomic, and especially sympathetic, nerve abnormalities are found. Emotional stress, Helicobacter pylori infection, and so on are considered as pain-inducing factors. Patients showed abnormalities of fasting gastroduodenal motility. Abdominal pain is closely associated with abnormal gastroduodenal motilities, especially with the appearance of bursts. Other abnormalities include hypomotility of the gastric antrum and disruption of the propagation of migrating motor complexes. Plasma concentration of motilin is significantly reduced in patients compared with controls. We discuss the management of patients with umbilical colic. (author abst.)
