Abstract;Omphalitis in newborn, umbilical granuloma, and umbilical polyp are discussed from the viewpoint of surgical practice. Antibiotic therapy is usually effective for omphalitis. However, abscess or cellulitis requires immediate surgery. Umbilical granuloma is often treated by cauterization with silver nitrate. If the mass does not regress, umbilical polyp must be suspected, and surgery may be required. Total resection of remnant tissue underneath the umbilicus is mandatory in patients with umbilical polyp.
