Abstract;Omphalocele is one of the major neonatal surgical diseases. The number of cases antenatally diagnosed has been increasing recently because of improvements in antenatal diagnosis methods. In addition, the clinical features of omphalocele are thought to have changed due to the increasing number of cases antenatally diagnosed. Therefore, we investigated changes in the number of antenatally diagnosed cases, the clinical features, the treatment, and the outcome in those cases treated in our department during the period from 1962 to 2003. As a result, an increase in the number of both severe cases and low-body-weight infants with omphalocele was characteristic of the period in which the disease was detected by antenatal diagnosis. During that period, the method of operation was not largely changed, but the outcome for curative cases were improved by various improvements in management. Finally, as one of the improvements in our management of cases with omphalocele, we describe the usefulness of simple measurement of intragastric pressure for the monitoring of intraabdominal pressure during the closure of abdominal defects.
