| Abstract;Clinical features of completely covered exstrophy are presented. This is a new entity that was first reported by Johnston and Koff in 1977, but because of its rarity, only six authentic cases including the authors'own have been reported m the world literature. The entity looks like a cloacal exstrophy internally, but the lower abdominal wall is intact. Hence, it mimics imperforate anus with recto-cloacal fistula. It is conjectured that some cases may have undergone treatment without a correct diagnosis of this lesion, and its recognition is urged. The embryology of completely covered cloacal exstrophy is complicated, but is explained to the best of the authors' ability. (author abst.) |
