Abstract;Omphalomesenteric duct malformations include a wide variety of abnormalities. They may range from a complete patent duct between the terminal ileum and the umbilicus to a variety of lesser remnants. Meckel's diverticulum is the most frequent type of these abnormalities, but is one of the most unlikely to cause symptoms. The patent omphalomesenteric duct may be diagnosed by fecal umbilical drainage and/or by contrast injections. In hemorrhagic Meckel's diverticulum 99mTc-pertechnetate nucleotide scan is widely employed for the detection of ectopic gastric tissue. In treating these abnormalities, less invasive techniques should be chosen, such as the umbilical approach for the patent omphalomesenteric duct and laparoscopic surgery for Meckel's diverticulum, in consideration for the long-term quality of the lives of the patients.
