Abstract;Sepsis poses a formidable and increasingly common challenge to the clinician. If unsuspected and left unchecked, it can progress to severe sepsis and on to septic shock with alarming rapidity. Although innovative therapies are being tested and novel management strategies are evolving, early diagnosis of this lethal disease still offers the patient the best chance of survival. The clinician should, therefore, have a high index of suspicion for this disease and should treat early and aggressively, even before complete laboratory and diagnostic results are available to confirm the diagnosis.
