| Abstract; In order to clarify the effects of water and moisture, we measured the fracture toughness of an as-cast spheroidal graphite cast iron (FCD) and an austempered spheroidal graphite cast iron (ADI) in three kinds of testing conditions; dry air (RH=0 %), humid air (RH=80 %) and water. In order to verify the TRIP (Transformation-induced plasticity) phenomenon, we also measured the volume fraction of retained austenite on the fracture surface in ADI specimens by the X-ray diffraction method. The results obtained are as follows: (1) while moisture in air has little effects on the fracture toughness of both FCD and ADI and water on that of FCD, water significantly decreases the fracture toughness of ADI. This phenomenon seems to be a kind of water embrittlement. (2) In ADI, the appearance of the fracture surface of the specimens fractured in water is of quasi-cleavage type, which is very different from that of the specimens fractured in air. (3) TRIP phenomenon is thought to be the main cause for the significant decrease in the fractute toughness of ADI due to water. (author abst.) |
