| Abstract;Uniform distribution of a small fraction of fine graphite is usually preferable for work rolls made of Ni-hard cast iron. The effects of adding boron and aluminum to the graphite structure in Ni-hard cast iron were investigated in unidirectionally solidified ingots in order to improve the distribution and morphology of graphite by EPMA and TEM analyses, because boron and aluminum are typical ledeburite promoting element and strong graphitization element, respectively. It is found that the addition of 0.03 to 0.2 mass% of boron is highly effective to obtain the desired structure of fine graphite distributing uniformly between ledeburite eutectic colonies. Aluminum hinders the favorable effects of boron, though the addition of aluminum increases the area fraction of graphite. The effects of boron are attributable to reduced stable .GAMMA.-graphite eutectic growth. Furthermore, boron nitride particles formed in molten state act as effective substrate for graphite nucleation. (author abst.) |
