Abstract; We propose a method to track human motions in an indoor scene by using IR (infra-red) image pattern projections. We are developing a system to support a memory-impaired person at his/her own home. To monitor human activities in daily life, we have to track human motions under various illumination conditions. In this paper, we describe a method to detect the 3-D appearance of users by using IR cameras and IR pattern projectors. By using this method, we can achieve widespread use and impose low visual impact on users. Human behavior is modeled as a distribution of 3-D appearances, and the results of this behavior detection are useful for instructing daily tasks to users. Finally, we show experimental results of using the proposed method for human tracking and behavior monitoring. (author abst.)
