Abstract;Studies on cost-effectiveness to assist with selection of appropriate treatments are increasingly common worldwide. We have made an analytical study of the cost-effectiveness of genital herpes treatment in Japan, including epidemiology, health care expenditure, as well as a social and economic analysis of the use of antiviral agents in other countries. National health care expenditure is increasing sharply in Japan: it has risen more than a hundred-fold from 215.2 billion yen in fiscal year 1954 to 31.124 trillion yen in fiscal year 2002, at which point it accounted for 8.58 % of national income. In response to this steep growth in health care expenditure, how funds are distributed needs to be evaluated not only in terms of medical effectiveness but in terms of public support. (author abst.)
