Abstract;Interest in magnesium alloy components has been increasing over the last decade in the automotive industry, due to growing concerns for the global environment. In spite of the environmentally friendly properties of magnesium alloys, the use of magnesium has been limited certain parts. One of the factors hindering for further application may be the relatively high material cost of magnesium alloys compared to aluminum alloys. In order to reduce material cost, it would be indispensable to develop economical in-house refining process for secondary materials. As a recycling method, the two-pot system has been applied at melting facilities and has proved to be a viable process with sufficient ability to remove inclusions from the melt. This paper summarizes the results of the pilot, plant, including melting facilities, refining conditions and quality of the refined metal and mass production plant. (author abst.)
