Abstract;Among the causes of death in infants over one year of age, accidents rank the highest. Yet in Japan there are no physicians who specialize in the care of injuries in children: in fact, the actual status of pediatric trauma care is not clearly understood. The absolute number of children who suffer from injuries, especially severe trauma or multiple injuries, is low, and one may expect that many physicians feel ill-equipped to manage children with injuries. Although the patient is a child, the basic approach to life-saving should not be different from that for an adult; the evaluation that is necessary at the initial examination and the priority of treatment should be comparable to what is practiced in adult medicine. It is true, however, that pediatric care differs from adult medicine in some areas, so one should always be aware of the unique nature of those in this age group when confronted with them. In the present report, the key points in dealing with pediatric trauma are explained with reference to the anatomical and physiological characteristics of children. (author abst.)
